Official Pinewood Derby Rules

 

1.     The Cub Scout must enter his own car.  This means that the Cub Scout must be present at Inspection and Registration to enter his car into competition.

2.     Only one car may be registered by any person in the Pinewood Derby.

3.     Wheel bearings and bushings are prohibited.

4.     The car shall not ride on springs.

5.     ONLY official Cub Scout Grand Prix Pinewood Derby wheels and axles are permitted.

6.     Axles must be installed using the pre-drilled holes on the Official Pinewood Derby block.  This means you may not move or change the wheel base of the car. 

7.     Construction of all entries MUST have begun AFTER last year’s (2010) Pack 353 Pinewood Derby 

8.     Only dry lubricant is permitted.

9.     Only one lubrication is allowed before the beginning of the first race, and then once again before the beginning of the first race of the semi-finals and finals. (You will have 3 possible opportunities to lube).

10.  Details, such as steering wheel and driver, are  permissible as long as these details do not exceed the maximum length, width, & height specifications.

11. The car must be free-wheeling, with no starting devices.

12. No loose material of any kind, such as lead shot, may be used.

13. Each car must pass inspection by the official inspection committee before it may compete.  If, at registration, a car does not pass inspection, the owner will be informed of the reason for failure and will be given time within the official weigh-in time period to make the adjustment.  After approval, cars will not be re-inspected unless the car is damaged in handling or in a race.

14.  No car may be altered in any way after it has been registered.

15. If a car is damaged while racing you will have 5 minutes to repair the car at which point the car must be re-inspected and meet original race specifications before it can race again 

16. No moving parts of any kind (including fabric)

17. Car must fit into Go - No/Go and have the door close to meet official race specifications

Maximum width   2.75 inches

Maximum height  3.00 inches

Maximum length 7.00 inches

Minimum ground clearance    0.375 inches

Minimum width between wheels   1.750 inches

Maximum Weight is 5.000 ounces, as determined by the Pack’s official scales.

 

Race Committee has the final say 

on any and all disputes.

 

                                Adult Race Rules

All entries must be made by an immediate family member of a member of the Pack.  Den Chiefs are members of our pack.  Former members of the pack that currently have no brothers, or children in the pack are not permitted to race.

               Adult Races only have 2 rules

 

1.     Maximum Weight is 5.000 ounces

2.     No Starting devices of any kind
